Every year in the United States the expenses for work-related skin issues exceed $1 billion. These skin issues are the most commonly reported non-injury among workers and can be found in many industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, sales, construction, customer service, utilities, and transportation. They are often caused by skin exposure to chemicals that may even come home on the worker’s clothes and expose the worker’s family.

Skin problems may be minor rashes and dryness, which are temporary and heal quickly, or they can result in long-lasting or permanent damage such as burns or organ damage. Skin exposure to chemicals can affect the worker’s quality of life and ability to provide for his/her family. Workers must be informed about the chemicals they are handling and given appropriate safety equipment and training.

Consulting with a knowledgeable work accident attorney can help you get the medical care and Worker’s Compensation Benefits you need to take care of you and your family if you have experienced skin exposure to chemicals at your workplace.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) listed their top ten violations from 2011. All of these violations can result in either death or injury of a worker.

The violations in order are...

  1. Scaffolding – planking or support gave way, worker slipped, worker hit by falling object
  2. Fall protection – falls listed as one of main causes of traumatic worker death by Department of Labor
  3. Hazard communication standard – chemicals not labeled or workers not trained to handle properly, manufacturers of chemicals not providing product information
  4. Respiratory protection – workers not provided with respirators to eliminate exposure
  5. Control of hazardous energy (Lockout/Tagout) – unexpected startup of machinery and equipment
  6. Electrical/wiring methods, components and equipment – workers exposed to shock, electrocution or fires
  7. Powered industrial trucks (forklifts) – workers drive off loading docks, forklifts strike workers, falls occur on pallets
  8. Ladders – workers must be protected whenever at a height of four feet or more
  9. Electrical systems design – misuse can create fires, explosion, or electrocution
  10. Machines – workers suffer crushed fingers/toes, amputations, blindness, or burns

In April of 2011, a blog post from the United States Department of Labor stated, “Every day in America, 12 people go to work and never come home.” Though this number is down from the 38 workers killed daily before OSHA, 12 workplace deaths are still too many.

Workers are hurt and/or killed far too often while they are simply trying to earn a living to raise their families. Factories pose risks such as heavy machinery amputations, hazardous chemical exposure, and pollutant inhalation. Public service workers such as police and firefighters face daily challenges with dangerous offenders and risky situations. Bank tellers and convenience store workers often deal with robberies and violent customers. Even office workers may suffer from ergonomic issues or unsafe environments. Every worker has the right to a safe work environment, but unfortunately, not every worker is given this chance.

If you had a loved one perish in a work-related accident, you have the right to Worker’s Compensation Death Benefits. A free consultation with an experienced Worker’s Compensation lawyer can assist you in securing the benefits needed to insure your family’s future. The experienced work injury attorneys of Wagner Reese & Crossen will provide you with the expertise needed to claim your benefits. Call us today to schedule your consultation at (888) 676-1598.

Brazilian Blowout, has been shown to emit formaldehyde gas. The manufacturer of the products, GIB, LLC, settled with the California Attorney General’s office on January 30 for $600,000 in fees and penalties due to deceptive advertising.

Brazilian Blowout products are used in a salon hair straightening process that can cost anywhere from $500-$1,500. Despite lab tests where the products contained almost 10% formaldehyde, the products were labeled “safe” and “formaldehyde-free.” Formaldehyde is a known carcinogenic and is on California’s Proposition 65 list of cancer-causing chemicals, requiring it to be labeled as such.

Salon workers who are exposed to these chemicals may experience difficulty breathing, nosebleeds, headaches and eye irritation. They can also experience allergic reactions of skin, eyes, and lungs in addition to being exposed to a cancer hazard. If you have been affected by Brazilian Blowout treatments, you should contact an experienced work injury attorney to understand your rights. You may be entitled to Worker’s Compensation benefits.

An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer was injured on February 1 in the Super Bowl Village after working to stop a fight at Kilroy’s on Meridian Street. Officer Jose Navarro was brought to the ground and injured his right elbow when he stepped between two men who were arguing about the line to the restroom. Officer Navarro was then brought to Methodist Occupational Health Care for observation.

Being hurt on the job can be a minor setback, such as this case, or it can lead to devastating long-term physical and/or emotional effects. In either case, injured workers have the right to file for compensation so that they can get their lives back on track and continue to work towards their families’ futures. If you have experienced an injury on the job, however minor, you should consult with an experienced work injury attorney to determine your eligibility for Worker’s Compensation benefits.
